CRAFTING IDENTITY THROUGH LEATHER

Baucha Crafts: From a Stairwell Corner to a Personal Lifestyle Brand

Sisir Maharjan | Founder | Baucha Crafts

How did the idea of Baucha Crafts first come to life?

Honestly, it all started from a personal need and curiosity. I was always searching for good-quality leather accessories that felt both strong and stylish—but they were either too expensive or didn’t last. I remember my first experiment was crafting a bag from leather scraps. Then I made a custom bag for my Bullet bike. That single piece sparked a deeper curiosity. I realized: if I could make something this functional and personal, why not try more?

What were the early days like?

Tough—really tough. We didn’t have proper tools, not even the basics like accurate cutters or reliable stitching machines. We started literally from a corner under the stairs, a space no one would expect a brand to grow from. But we were determined. Each mistake became a lesson. Gradually, we moved into a 10x10 ft workshop, and that became our creative lab. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours.

Why the name “Baucha”?

It’s a local term with warmth and familiarity. We wanted something that connected with people—something distinctly Nepali. Baucha is easy to remember, sounds affectionate, and carries a local soul, just like our products.

Why leather, and why small accessories?

Leather speaks of permanence. It ages beautifully and carries the user’s story over time. I’ve always felt accessories—wallets, watch straps, key rings—are more than items. They’re everyday essentials that reflect personality. Often, they’re made without much thought to quality. I wanted to change that. We focus on the small but significant items that need attention to detail.

How do you ensure quality with everything being handmade?

Precision is our promise. Each item goes through multiple steps of inspection from stitching to finishing. Our artisans are trained to focus on durability without compromising aesthetics. We don’t mass-produce. It’s slow fashion with purpose.

Where do you source your materials from?

Mostly local. That’s very important to us. Supporting local tanneries and markets is part of our sustainability promise. We want our success to also benefit the Nepali economy.

What motivates you today?

Every time a customer says, “This feels personal,” it drives me further. I want to build a brand that feels intimate, that people trust not just for quality, but for the story behind it. We're not trying to chase trends. We're building something that lasts—in design, in purpose, and in memory.

What's next for Baucha Crafts?

We’re slowly evolving into a lifestyle brand while staying true to our roots. Expanding our product range thoughtfully, improving our techniques, and maybe even opening a dedicated experience store soon. We want people to not just buy Baucha—they should feel Baucha.

The idea of Baucha Crafts originated from a personal need and curiosity for strong, stylish, and high-quality leather accessories that were often either too expensive or didn't last. The founder's first experiments were crafting a bag from leather scraps, followed by a custom bag for his Bullet bike, which "sparked a deeper curiosity" and the realization of its potential. The initial phase was "Tough—really tough." The brand started in a corner "under the stairs," lacking basic necessities like accurate cutters or reliable stitching machines. The founder notes that "Each mistake became a lesson."
