WE’RE ACTIVELY MODERNIZING OUR APPROACH BY INVESTING IN DIGITAL GROWTH

Modernizing Nepal's Watch Retail with Digital Innovation, and the Growing Market

Arjit Lal Shrestha | Director | Sulux Centre

You were born and raised around watches, how did that environment shape your passion for timepieces?

Growing up in a family deeply involved in the watch business, I was constantly surrounded by prestigious Swiss brands and the world of horology. I often accompanied my father, the founder of Sulux Centre, to our stores, which gave me a hands-on learning experience from a young age. This exposure naturally sparked a strong passion for fine timepieces and Swiss craftsmanship. It laid the foundation for my lifelong connection to the industry.

What was the very first watch you owned, and what does it mean to you today?

Choosing my first watch was a memorable and exciting milestone. After researching many brands we represented, I selected a Victorinox an ideal pick for a student due to its durability, elegance, and practicality. It remains symbolic of my entry into the world of watch collecting and continues to remind me of my early steps in the business. That watch holds sentimental and professional significance.

When did you officially join Sulux Center, and do you still remember your first day at work?

I officially joined Sulux Centre in 2018, right after completing my Bachelor's degree. My initial days were focused on observing the operational side of the business and identifying areas where I could contribute meaningfully. I aimed to integrate modern strategies and insights to improve efficiency, while respecting the legacy already built. It was both exciting and eye-opening.

How does it feel to represent the second generation in Nepal’s watch business?

It’s an honor to be part of the second generation continuing our family legacy in Nepal’s watch industry. Thanks to the groundwork laid by the first generation, customers today are more aware and appreciative of quality timepieces. This strong foundation allows us to focus on elevating brand presence and further educating the market. It's both a responsibility and a privilege.

As a young entrepreneur, how do you view the future of the watch industry in Nepal?

I see great potential for growth in Nepal’s watch industry, especially with younger generations becoming more passionate about international brands. There's a noticeable shift where watches are not just functional, but a form of personal expression and style. This growing interest gives us immense opportunity to expand and innovate. The future looks very promising.

Many people feel that the watch business remains quite traditional, what efforts are you making to bring it into a new era?

We’re actively modernizing our approach by investing in digital growth, expanding our point-of-sale locations, and revamping our showrooms for a premium customer experience. The goal is to blend tradition with innovation. By embracing new technologies and retail trends, we’re positioning ourselves to meet the evolving needs of modern watch buyers.

Could you share the latest developments and updates from Sulux Center?

As the Nepali watch market continues to mature, we are consistently looking for ways to enrich the customer experience. We are in the process of introducing more international brands to our portfolio to cater to the rising demand. Our focus remains on offering authentic, high-quality timepieces with exceptional service. This continuous evolution is key to staying ahead.

You’ve been adding many international brands to your portfolio do you believe the Nepali market is big enough to sustain them?

Absolutely. Nepal is rapidly evolving, with a growing population that values luxury, fashion, and lifestyle. The younger generation is especially interested in collecting and investing in premium timepieces. With the right positioning and education, we believe the market can not only sustain but also thrive with these global brands.

How do you assess the current level of competition in Nepal’s watch market?

The competition in Nepal’s watch market is currently healthy and encouraging. It drives us to continuously improve and innovate while staying customer-focused. More players entering the space also helps create broader awareness of the value and appeal of luxury watches. It ultimately benefits the industry as a whole.

What message would you like to give to watch enthusiasts and collectors in Nepal?

I encourage enthusiasts to explore a variety of brands and add at least one standout piece from each to their collection. Take time to research and understand which watch aligns with your personality and lifestyle. Also, dive into the heritage and story behind each brand,  it adds meaning to your collection and enhances your appreciation for horology.

With high taxes keeping watches expensive in Nepal, what strategies are you considering to make them more accessible and affordable?

We are committed to maintaining international MRP pricing to ensure transparency and fairness for our customers. Despite the high import duties, we strive to provide value through official warranties, after-sales service, and authentic brand experiences. Our goal is to make premium watches more accessible without compromising on quality.
